Lower investment attractiveness and tighter environmental requirements are hampering the development of a rather young market of oil services in the Russian Federation. The growing share of oil services companies owned directly by or affiliated with local vertically integrated oil majors leads to obvious monopolization of the market. This causes discriminatory pricing for independent market players, underpinned by the pressure from monopolist customers, unfair contract conditions, and as a result pushes small and medium-sized companies out of the market, as they are simply unable to provide the appropriate level of services. The absence of long-term contracts and advance payments, long delays in payments for work already performed can also be attributed to the key problems in the industry.
Despite all the difficulties, the volume of drilling services market in Russia, which has the share of about 35% in total structure of oil services, will continue to grow. The growth drivers will include higher investment volumes by oil companies in the development of new production technologies: horizontal drilling, hydro fracking, digitalization of processes, processing of drilling wastes.
The construction of wells is now and will remain the most difficult and costly process, because it is necessary to take into account the specifics of deposits, the depth and particulars of formations etc. The quality of construction, including the quality of opening the productive formation, depends directly on the drilling fluids used. Taking into consideration the importance of using high-quality formulations in drilling and oil production, we consider it necessary to get together in the expert discussion of the results of the past year and to outline the path for further development of the industry.
