The four-year long consecutive decline in car sales in the Russian market ended in 2017 and was replaced by modest growth. The key reason was the demand supported by the government, and the increased car export volumes. To maintain further development of the market, prolongation of balanced government measures is extremely important. What will the support strategy for the automotive industry be in the nearest future?
The challenges of the Russian auto components market are well-known: the lack of affordable and high-quality local materials, import duties on foreign-made feedstock, high costs of time-consuming homologation procedures, instability of supply, low production volumes. The industry needs financing for modernization, for establishment of new and duly equipped laboratories and production lines. And the investment, the loans need to arrive on preferential, long-term conditions to keep the end-product price under control.
With respect to the feedstock polymers, a lot depends on the consolidated approach of the carmakers and the auto component producers to procurement of plastics. The volume of polymer consumption per each corporation is too low for the base plastic supplier to invest in new polymer grades. But if the co-operation with feedstock producers is based on joint approach from the automotive side, then it may prove successful and lead to localizing supplies of advanced plastic materials.
