The Russian economy continues to struggle, however the situation in the plastic packaging market is upstream, in contrast. The experts point out a number of factors that benefit the industry: the ruble’s devaluation supports local manufacturers, certain multinational companies are localizing production, and the import substitution programs create a favorable environment for development.
A closer look at the segment reveals that the trends are not the same for everyone and everywhere. While plastics producers achieve sustainable and positive results, the situation in converting business is ambiguous. Plastics converters are challenged by higher feedstock costs, impossibility to proportionally raise final product prices, limited access to finance, legal restrictions, and strengthening of safety regulations.
The market players are also threatened by possible lifting of Russia’s embargo on food supplies from the West, which will undoubtedly hit the domestic food producers, and the demand for local packaging will fall subsequently. With respect to this, the key topic of the «Plastics in Packaging 2017» Conference is the future of converters. What is their view of the market, what are the difficulties they face, and which support measures they expect, – these are the issues that we suggest be discussed at the Conference.
