Despite difficulties in the country’s economy, the Russian market of styrene plastics has been growing over the past years. Local producers are increasing capacities, expanding the product line, and exploring new consumption segments. The rise in prices for European polystyrene and the weak ruble have caused a significant drop in imports of general-purpose and high-impact polystyrene; the decline exceeded 30%. Are Russian producers able to compete with foreign suppliers in price and quality?
At present, the main problem in the market is the combination of limited resources and high cost of feedstock. As exporting the base polymer continues to be attractive, the shortage of certain grades is becoming critical. The situation in construction, the main consumption segment, is extremely unfavorable. The downturn in construction jeopardizes the entire sector of EPS and XPS plastic insulation in Russia and the CIS. Market participants are exploring other consumption segments: packaging, automotive and household appliances sectors are becoming more attractive for investors. The growth potential here is very large. At the same time the competition is high, too.
The outlook for the polymer foams market is positive: consumption in this sector demonstrates a steady growth. In the past, the development of Russian polymer foams market was mainly based on the demand in construction sector, while now the companies are focused on industrial and food packaging, and the share of foamed plastics in consumption structure is growing. What changes should be expected in the polymer foams market, and what is the potential for further development locally? – these are the key issues for the segment.
