The developments in the Russian cable industry are ambiguous. On the one hand, the drop in imports of feedstock and products gave Russian companies an opportunity to grow their share in the market. On the other hand, the shrinking consumption drives local cable plants into fierce price competition. The logical solution in this situation would be to promote export of Russian cable products to the foreign markets.
Producers of polymer feedstock for cable insulation in Russia are expanding capacities and the assortment of grades, but this is the case for large-capacity production. Meanwhile, the special-purpose grades continue to be imported, and there are certain segments with higher requirements to quality and properties, where foreign-made cable products are not yielding positions to a local alternative.
Without doubt, the problems of market development are connected not only with raw materials. Many companies lack the opportunity to attract investment in R&D and to modernize the technological chain, while the shortage of technically astute workforce poses danger to the future of the industry.
