The market situation in Russia has changed drastically over the past year. Global methanol prices continue to fall. While earlier, Russian producers had mainly counted on export, it has now become unattractive despite the ruble’s depreciation. At the same time, local consumption grew by 13% in 2015 year-over-year. One of the growth drivers is higher MTBE production. Step by step, Russian producers come to realize that their material is in demand in the domestic market, which means that there is still a stimulus to increase capacities.
With this respect, the market players continue to discuss new methanol production facilities in Russia. There are projects announced long ago and being on different stages of completion, and also the «newcomers» that have surfaced during the past year. How shall the existing producers compete in a new environment, and will there be room for new supplies, – this is the main topic of «Methanol 2016» Conference.
